Welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage at Ore Village Primary Academy & Nursery

Welcome to the Ore Village Primary Academy & Nursery community.

We offer a nurturing environment for 3-4 year olds to explore their interests and develop important skills.

At Ore Village Nursery we give all children the opportunity to be part of our school community ahead of them preparing for the move into the main school. We have lots of contact with our Reception class in order to support children with a smooth transition.

You will find all the important information about your child’s time in the nursery, including our early years curriculum, example timetable, and key contacts here and within our handbook.

What is Early Years?

In the Foundation Stage we believe that children learn best and can achieve their potential through well planned play. This reflects the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside.

Four main themes and principles underpin everything we do at school:

A Unique Child

Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.

Positive Relationships

Children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person.

Enabling Environments

The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning.

Learning and Development

Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and all areas of Learning and Development are equally important and inter-connected.

The EYFS Framework explains how and what your child will be learning to support their healthy development. Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.

These prime areas, which are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning, are:

● Communication and language;

● Physical development;

● Personal, social and emotional development.

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. These are:

● Literacy;

● Mathematics;

● Understanding the world;

● Expressive arts and design.

Our Nursery has two sessions in a day:

Morning session : 8:45am - 11:45pm
Afternoon session : 12pm - 3pm

Each session follows a similar structure, but learning opportunities are adapted to support each unique group of children. This means children attending two sessions in a day will experience a variety of opportunities and provision.

Bagels are available in the morning session and fruit and milk is provided throughout the day.

Morning Session
8:45 - 9:30 Soft start - Children settle and access indoor provision, they may have some morning jobs to build their independence. Bagels are provided during this time.
9:30 - 9:45 Carpet time – Children gather together to sing songs, share ideas and have a conversation. Fun maths is included during this time in the form of counting or a song.
9:45 - 11:00

Continuous Provision -  Children access play, carefully set up to suit their needs.  Adults observe and support children during their play to help them develop key skills.  During this time children also access the outdoors.

Snacks and milk will also be provided.
11:00 - 11:10 Phonics – Children have a short phonics session, phase 1 develops speaking and listening skills.
11:10 - 11:45 Small group work and continuous provision - Children have more access to provision, and may be part of an adult led group to help develop key skills.
11:45 - 12:00 Tidy up and Story – Every session ends with a group tidy up and a story.  Children attending all day will go to lunch in the hall with Reception.
Afternoon Session
12:00 - 12:45 Lunch time and Outdoor Play - The Nursery children join Reception for lunch in the hall, followed by time together on the playground. If your child is just attending the afternoon session they will be greeted in the nursery before joining the other children.
12:45 - 1:00 Carpet time – Children gather together to sing songs, share ideas and have a conversation. Fun maths is included during this time in the form of counting or a song.
1:00 - 2:00

Continuous Provision -  Children access play, carefully set up to suit their needs.  Adults observe and support children during their play to help them develop key skills.  During this time children also access the outdoors.

Snacks and milk will also be provided.
2:00 - 2:10 Phonics – Children have a short phonics session, phase 1 develops speaking and listening skills.  This will be different from the morning session.
2:10 - 2:45 Small group work and continuous provision - Children have more access to provision, and may be part of an adult led group to help develop key skills.
2:45 - 3:00 Tidy up and Story – The day ends with a tidy up time and a story to finish the day.

Continuous provision describes the essential high-quality resources that are provided for children to interact with creatively without the support of an adult.

In our nursery we carefully observe the children and set up our environment to reflect the interests and learning needs of the children.

Provision is open-ended, meaning children can interact with it in lots of different ways. The provision will always provide opportunities for children to access all 7 areas of learning and development set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework.

Children’s learning does not stop when they walk out the gate after a session at nursery, they are continuously learning and developing key skills. Your key worker will always be willing and able to share your child’s targets and progress with you, and you will also be invited to stay & play sessions at the end of each term to see your child’s learning journal.

We ask for parents/carers to contribute to the learning journals by filling in ‘wow vouchers’ when your child has done something really impressive at home. Maybe they have graduated from wearing nappies, maybe they have given up their dummy, or perhaps they dressed themselves for the first time.

Just ask a member of the team if you need a new ‘wow voucher’ and we will always add these to your child’s learning records.

At Ore Village Primary Academy & Nursery we are committed to supporting all children to transition smoothly into the setting. The SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) is responsible for managing and coordinating the support for children with special educational needs, including those who have an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan).

The SENCo will work closely with nursery teachers, the Local Authority and other agencies to ensure that every child’s needs are met.

Our SENCo is Stephen Tippett and he can be contacted by email at senco@ovpa-tkat.org
or by calling 01424 422979

In nursery we are always active and get very stuck into our learning.

Please make sure your child is always wearing comfortable weather appropriate clothing, with closed footwear that has fastenings your child can attempt to do.

We invite the children to wear a blue school jumper or cardigan, this helps us to feel a part of the school community. If you would like an item with a logo they can be purchased from Superstitch or online from MYClothing

Cold Weather

  • Please provide a pair of wellies to stay at Nursery, this helps us to access all of our outdoor spaces even in wet weather.
  • Please provide a warm, waterproof coat every day.

Hot Weather

  • Please make sure your child always has a sun hat
  • Please apply sunscreen before your child attends Nursery. All day sunscreen is best. Children can bring in their own named sunscreen for re-application following permission from parents/carers.

If your child is using nappies you will need to provide a nappy bag with an appropriate number of changes and wipes.

Please ensure your child arrives at nursery clean and dry, nappies will be checked regularly and intimate care needs will be carried out by your child’s key worker where possible or another known member of nursery staff.

We support families and children with their potty training journey using the materials from ERIC.
