A great first week back and wonderful to see so many of our pupils enjoying the outdoors as part of their learning ☀️ Our assemblies this term have a theme of ‘Diversity’ where we are looking at what makes us unique and celebrating our differences. In the last week of term, we come off-timetable to explore diversity at a deeper level and will be inviting our families in for Open Learning on the last day of term. 🥰 This term, we have invited PC Eastes to regularly visit our school. He will be outside our gates to ensure that everything is calm and orderly as our pupils come in and out of school. PC Eastes will also be talking to our Year 6 pupils in preparation for secondary school. 👮♂️ It has been wonderful to see lots of smiley faces back in school. 😊 Have a great weekend 🙌🏼 The OVPA Team 💙

It’s been a busy but fun-filled few weeks with our pupils enjoying a range of great learning opportunities. We introduced an overnight residential trip at Mallydams to our Year 5 pupils who thoroughly enjoyed being fully immersed in nature and exploring the great outdoors. Thank you to Mr Bula Edge for organising this and to Miss Foster, Mr Homewood, Miss Sheldrake and Mr Newell for accompanying the children. Our whole school supported Red Nose Day by donating a £1 to come in to school in non-uniform. Many wore red and some donned an 80s outfit to celebrate the 40 years of Red Nose Day fundraising. Our super chess champions have been competing all over East Sussex, putting OVPA on the map and excelling in their strategic thinking. We are incredibly proud of everyone that has taken part and represented the school. Year 5 have been working with Barefoot Opera’s innovative and engaging new project – RED. All their hard work was celebrated this week when they performed to parents. A wonderful experience for all. It’s been great to see the pupils earning their class treats. Some of the Year 3/4 children were enjoying a PJ and pizza party today which looked fabulous fun. We are now heading in to the last week of term and we will be ready for a well-deserved Easter break. Have a great weekend. The OVPA Team 💙

We started the term by welcoming some visitors to the school. 👋🏼 Year 1 and 2 listened to our guests from Thakeham Building & Construction, who shared how houses are built and how to stay safe on a building site. 🏡 Year 5 started their Opera experience and were incredibly lucky to have a fabulous introduction from Anthony at Barefoot Opera. Year 5 will be taking part in their own Opera performance which we are very excited about. 🎭 Cross-Country Trials took place this week for those pupils in Year 5 & 6 who were interested in taking part in the upcoming inter-school competition at Sandown. A huge well done to everyone who took part and congratulations to the runners who qualified for the team! Miss Pine is running additional training sessions for the squad in preparation for this event🏃🏽♂️👏 Our youngest pupils have been searching for signs of Spring as they learn what a botanist is. Year 3 had their first Forest School this term and enjoyed getting muddy and helping to clear the vegetable patch of weeds. 🌳 🌱 🌷 It’s World Book Day this week. Although the national day is Thursday, we are celebrating on FRIDAY for a fabulous finish to the week. This year pupils are encouraged to explore the characters they enjoy reading about the most in a way that celebrates the joy of reading for pleasure and sharing books they love. As always this can be dress-up if they wish, bringing in favourite books and sharing what they love to read! 📕 📣 Shout out to Year 5 who were ALL in uniform on a day that I did a spot-check. They were awarded a contribution to their class reward which they are now a bit closer to! Keep it up Year 5 - looking smart representatives of our school. See you all tomorrow for week two. Don’t forget the gates open at 08:35 and close at 08:45. Please try to be at school on time so the children can start their learning promptly. The OVPA Team 💙

What Makes Us Human? – A Deep Dive into History This term, we embark on a profound historical journey across all year groups, guided by our overarching question: “What makes us human?” Through the stories of remarkable figures and pivotal events, students will explore the complexities of humanity and what drives individuals to make a difference. 🌱 EYFS: Jane Colden – A Pioneering Botanist Reception students will step into history through the inspiring story of Jane Colden, one of the first female botanists. Through fairy tales and historical narratives, they will discover how her passion for plants helped her break barriers in a male-dominated field. By exploring objects mentioned in these tales, students will see how science and storytelling intertwine, inspiring them to appreciate both the natural world and the past. 🎩 Year 1/2: Childhood in the Victorian Era Students will journey back to the Victorian era, exploring childhood experiences during this time. They will compare the lives of children from wealthy families to those forced into harsh labour conditions. Through the searching question, “What was it like to be a child in Victorian times?”, students will reflect on human rights, social change, and how far we’ve come—while recognising the challenges that still remain. 🏛 Year 3/4: Romans – Builders, Conquerors, and Innovators Students will immerse themselves in the fascinating world of Ancient Rome. They will examine Roman society, innovations, and conquests, considering how Roman culture continues to shape our world today. By exploring leadership, citizenship, and daily life in the Roman Empire, students will reflect on what makes civilisations thrive and what lessons we can learn from history. They will also investigate how the Romans conquered Britain and explore the lasting impact of Roman rule, tackling the key question: How did the Romans change life in Britain? ✊ Year 5/6: Imperialism, Apartheid, and Nelson Mandela Our oldest students will engage with the complex history of imperialism and apartheid in South Africa. They will explore how imperialism shaped nations and how apartheid created a system of racial segregation and inequality. Through the inspiring life of Nelson Mandela, students will discover his extraordinary journey from prisoner to president and his role in uniting a divided country. How did imperialism lead to apartheid, and how did it affect people’s lives? This question will guide them in understanding history’s impact on the present and the power of resilience and leadership in shaping a better world. As we dive into history this term, we encourage you to continue these discussions at home. Ask your child what they’ve learned, share your own stories, and explore together what it truly means to be human. We look forward to an inspiring and thought-provoking term ahead! 🎉 Mr Newell, History Lead

🌟 🪩 Year 6 Time to Dance 🪩 🌟 Tonight it was our Year 6 dancers that lit up the White Rock stage at Time to Dance. They were nothing short of amazing as they took us back to the 90s! So much energy and enthusiasm that got the whole audience clapping along 👏🏻 You made us so proud, each and every one of you. Well done 💙 Huge thanks to Molly from Funk Fusion Fitness for all your work with the children and giving them the confidence to shine! 💜

🕺🏻 🪩 💃🏻🌟 KS1 Time to Dance 🌟 💃🏻 🪩🕺🏻 Look at our incredible dancers from Years 1 & 2 who got on the big stage of The White Rock Theatre today and performed to a full audience! We are SO proud of you 💙 This year’s theme of ‘memories’ involved our dancers setting a wedding scene with the bride and groom fondly reminiscing about their special day 🌷 💍 👰🏻♀️ All the children were so brave and their dazzling smiles lit up the stage. After weeks of rehearsals, this little crew put on a show that will be held in their special memories for years to come! This week Mrs Ferguson, our Pupil Wellbeing Lead, has coordinated our focus on mental health and wellbeing as part of Children's Mental Health Week 2025. This year’s theme, ‘Know Yourself, Grow Yourself’ has aimed to help children embrace self-awareness and explore what it means to them. The children have been thinking about themselves- their likes, dislikes and strengths. They have focused on understanding their feelings and to manage feelings when they get too big. Today the children were invited to express themselves by wearing clothes that reflected their personalities so we could celebrate each person be unique and special. On Tuesday afternoon, our pupils in Year 4 and some of our pupils in Year 5 took part in the Pearls of the Sea Showcase at The White Rock Theatre. This was a cultural experience celebrating the project work the children had taken part in with Hastings Contemporary and Hastings Piano International. The performance was wonderful and we were exceptionally proud of everyone who took part. Our pupils in Year 2 enjoyed a wonderful visit to Ashburnham Place where they learned about plants and growing, the importance of mini-beasts and healthy soil. They met the free-range chickens and made flat breads in the outdoor kitchen to eat. This wonderful trip was fully funded by The Country Trust who are a national charity who bring alive the working countryside and connecting young people to food and farming. The week finished with a lovely tour of The Hastings Academy where I was so impressed by the behaviour and engagement of the students, even during a busy wet lunch break. It was such a pleasure to see so many familiar faces who weren’t too cool to say hello to their old Headteacher! THA offers a rich and varied curriculum with a focus on high expectations, catch up programmes and vocational opportunities. I was very impressed to see their room of 5 stripped motorbikes for repair and a fully functioning hair and beauty salon. We are looking forward to starting some exciting transition plans to support our pupils moving on to secondary school. Mr van Kan, our Chair of Governors, met with the Junior Leadership Team today and they looked through our new website that Mr Paramor has been diligently building. It’s looking great and we have planned for some professional photographs to be taken to capture all the wonderful things we do at OVPA. We are heading in to the last week of term where we will be enjoying Time to Dance, our talent show and Open Learning afternoon. Have a great weekend everyone! Mrs Campbell 💙

It was wonderful to see our Year 3 & 4 pupils share their stories with Year 1, inspiring them with their fantastic writing. ✏️ In our forest school sessions, we continue to see the development of independence, co-operation, risk-assessing, problem-solving and resilience. There’s so much more than marshmallows and hot chocolate to our carefully planned sessions where the children love the freedom to explore. 🍃 Reception and Nursery pupils have been immersed in learning about Chinese New Year. Is is the year of the snake and the children enjoyed trying Chinese food, making lanterns and joining in this wonderful celebration. 🐍 🇨🇳 Well done to our Y5 & Y6 boys’ footballers who played in a TKAT tournament against Pebsham, Smarden and Pluckley Primary Academies. Although defeated, they gave it their all in the muddy conditions and showed great sportsmanship. ⚽️ Have a wonderful weekend everyone. Mrs Campbell & all at OVPA 💙
